Jesus Is The Christ

     There are some that preach God, but deny that Jesus is the Son of God, the Christ, that was promised throughout the Old Testament of the Bible. Some might say, as long as we believe in God, everything will be ok, and that it is not that important what we might believe about Jesus. But I want to show, from the word of God, that what we think about Jesus, and who He is, is indeed VERY important!

     The word "Christ" in the new testament (the Greek language), is the same word as "Messiah" in the old testament (the Hebrew language). 

     Some other names given to Jesus from the Old Testament are: God's Servant, Prince Of Peace, Immanuel, which is the same as Emmanuel in Matthew 1:23, meaning  "God with us".

     Here are some verses from the Old Testament foretelling of Jesus:

“The Lord thy God will raise up unto thee a Prophet from the midst of thee, of thy brethren, like unto Me (God); unto Him ye shall hearken.” Deuteronomy 18:15.

"Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince shall be seven weeks... And after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not for Himself..." (Jesus willingly came to this world to suffer and be crucified to pay the penalty for our sins.) Daniel 9:25,26.

"Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call His name Immanuel." Isaiah 7:14.

"For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon His shoulder: and His name shall be called Wonderful, Counseller, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace." Isaiah 9:6.

"He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from Him; He was despised, and we esteemed Him not. Surely He hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem Him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon Him; and with His stripes we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on Him the iniquity of us all... Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise Him; He hath put Him to grief: when Thou shalt make His soul an offering for sin, He shall see His seed, He shall prolong His days, and the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in His hand. He shall see of the travail of His soul, and shall be satisfied: by His knowledge shall my Righteous Servant justify many; for He shall bear their iniquities." Isaiah 53:3-6,10,11.

     Here are some verses from the New Testament connecting Jesus with the Promised One of the Old Testament:

"Who is a liar but he that denieth that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist that denieth the Father and the Son. Whosoever denieth the Son, the same hath not the Father: But he that acknowledgeth the Son hath the Father also. Let that therefore abide in you, which ye have heard from the beginning. If that which ye have heard from the beginning shall remain in you, ye also shall continue in the Son, and in the Father. And this is the promise that He hath promised us, even eternal life. These things have I written unto you concerning them that seduce you.” 1 John 2:22-26.

“Whosoever believeth that Jesus is the Christ is born of God.” 1 John 5:1.

“He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself: He that believeth not God hath made Him (God) a liar; because he believeth not the record (promise) that God gave of His Son. And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life. These things have I written unto you that believe on the Name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the Name of the Son of God.” 1 John 5:10-13.

“Let not your heart be troubled: Ye believe in God, believe also in Me… Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: No man cometh unto the Father but by Me.” John 14:1,6.

“And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.” Matthew 16:16.

“And Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no man deceive you. For many shall come in My name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many.” Matthew 24:4,5.

“Let no man deceive you with vain words: For because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience.” Ephesians 5:6.

“Beware lest any man spoil (deceive) you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of this world, and not after Christ.” Colossians 2:8.

“The woman saith unto Him, I know that Messias cometh, which is called Christ: When He is come, He will tell us all things. Jesus saith unto her, I that speak unto thee am He.” John 4:25,26.

“And we believe and are sure that Thou art that Christ, the Son of the living God.” John 6:69.

“And Jacob begat Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ.” Matthew 1:16.

“Then He (Jesus) said unto them, O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken: Ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter into His glory? And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, He expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning Himself.” Luke 24:25,26.

What is God’s plan for His people?

God was not suprised by the sin of Adam. 
He always knows everything that will ever happen.
God made everything to show his glory. Part of God’s glory is his great love and forgiveness.

There can be no victory over evil when there is no struggle against sin.
God’s plan has always been to show his power and goodness by rescuing lost sinners.
By defeating evil and changing the hearts of his fallen people, God shows his justice, power, and love.

Way back in Eden, right after Adam sinned, God told that he would send a child to crush Satan.
This promised child was not born for many thousands of years after that promise was made.
The promised child was Jesus.

Jesus is called the Christ. 
Long ago men who were Priests, Prophets, and Kings had oil or water poured over their heads.
They did this in a ceremony when they started their job of serving the people.
It was called “anointing”. It showed everyone that the person had a special job to do for God.

The Old Testament was written in the ancient Hebrew language.
God’s promised child was called the Messiah. It comes from that old Hebrew word.
The word for someone anointed in Hebrew is Meshiakh. In Hebrew is it ﬦשׁיח.
The Hebrew people waited for thousands of years for this Messiah to come.

The New Testament was written in Greek. The Greek word for someone anointed is Christos.
In the Greek language the word Christos looks like this: Χριστος.
We take off the Greek ending on the word and it becomes, “Christ”.

So Jesus is the Messiah, the Christ, God’s anointed one. He was that child God told Adam and Eve about.

The job Jesus came to do was to pay for the sin and guilt of his people.
When he suffered and died on the cross he died in their place.

God does not just forget about our sins. He came as Jesus Christ to pay for those sins Himself.

“Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. But his delight is in the law of the Lord (the word of God); and in His law doth he meditate day and night” (Psa. 1:1-2).

The believer who separates himself from all known evil, who heeds God’s admonition to “be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect will of God,” and who can truthfully say to the Lord that “Thy words were found, and I did eat them; and Thy word was unto me the joy and rejoicing of mine heart: for I am called by Thy name, O Lord God of hosts,” that person will be a fruitful Christian, “like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.” For when we delight in and obey the Word of God, we are abiding in Christ, who said, “If ye keep My commandments, ye shall abide in My love; even as I have kept My Father’s commandments, and abide in His love,” and, “He that abideth in Me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit; for without Me ye can do nothing.” Our Lord further said, “Herein is My Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be My disciples.”

Would you be fruitful for the Lord,

And show Him forth each day?

So that men might see and want Him,

Who alone is the way?

There Is Forgiveness

     The Bible asks a question in Proverbs chapter 20 verse 9: "Who can say, I have made my heart clean, I am pure from my sin? And in Romans chapter 3, verses 10 and 23, the answer is given: "There is none righteous, no not one... for all have sinned and come short of the glory of God."

     Repeating the opening verse in the picture: "If Thou, Lord, shouldest mark iniquities, O Lord, who shall stand?" Psalm 130:3. God knows all things, He knows our hearts better than we do, and He tells us very plainly that we have all sinned. This should not come as a suprise to any of us, because if we are at all honest with ourselves, we have to acknowledge we have all sinned many, many times.

     The Bible says in Ezekiel 18:4: " the soul that sinneth, it shall die." and in Romans 6:23 it says "For the wages of sin is death." Sin separates us from God, and if we die in our sins, that is, die without receiving forgiveness, we will face the judgement of God, and be cast into Hell for all of eternity. "It is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:" Hebrews 9:27. And: "It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God." Hebrews 10:31.God is absolutely perfect and Holy, so no one who has sinned can stand before Him, or enter into His Heaven. 

     Did you know that Hell was prepared for the Devil? "Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels:" Matthew 25:41. He does not want you or I to end up there. "Have I any pleasure at all that the wicked should die? Saith the Lord God." Ezekiel 18:23. "The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance." 2 Peter 3:9.

      And now for the GOOD NEWS!!!

     Because of the incredible, unspeakable love God has for us, He has provided a way for anyone and everyone to receive the forgiveness of their sins, and to be seen as absolutely perfect and Holy in His sight! "For God so loved the world, that He gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life." John 3:16. "For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord." Romans 6:23. 

     God sent His only begotten Son, our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, down here to this world. He led a perfect, sinless, Holy life, was crucified by the cruel hands of men, then offered Himself up to God, as the sacrifice to pay the penalty for our sins. Once we have trusted Jesus, and received Him as our personal Lord and Saviour, we are then washed from our sins by the shed blood of Christ, and now when God looks at us, He sees His Son, who paid the price for our sin, and we are then seen as righteous and blameless in His eyes!

     As we read earlier, eternal life is a gift of God. (Romans 6:23.) There is nothing a guilty sinner can do, of ourselves, to be acceptable in His sight. It is only by accepting the free gift of grace, that is available to everyone. "For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works,lest any man should boast." Ephesians 2:8,9. 

     To sum up this gospel message, we have all sinned and separated ourselves from God. We are deserving of nothing else but to be cast into Hell for all of eternity. But, because of the unspeakable love God has for us, He sent His Son, to suffer, shed His precious, sinless blood, and die, to pay the penalty for our sins.

      Jesus is reaching out to you right now, inviting you to have your sins forgiven, and receive this precious gift of eternal life. Won't you come to Him right now, just as you are and just where you are, and pray this simple prayer? Dear Lord Jesus, I realize that I am a sinner in need of forgiveness, and that I deserve to pay my own sin debt. I believe that You died  on the cross, that You shed Your precious blood to pay for my sins, and after three days you arose victoriously from the grave, conquering sin and death and Hell. I believe that you alone are my Saviour. Thank You for saving me from Hell and giving me the wonderful gift of eternal life. I am now a child of God. Amen.  

     No matter what you may have done in the past, or what condition your life is in right now, God's Grace is greater than your sin, all can be forgiven. But do not put this off, none of us knows what a day may bring forth, you may not have another time to receive Christ as your Saviour.

"For He saith, I have heard thee in a time accepted, and in the day of salvation have I succoured (helped) thee: behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation." 2 Cor. 6:2.

Bear Ye One Another's Burdens

“Bear ye one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ” (Gal. 6:2).

In the family of God, there are always those who are undergoing sorrow or pressure and who need help and encouragement. If we would “fulfill the law of Christ,” we are to “bear ... one another’s burdens,” “for even Christ pleased not Himself; but, as it is written, The reproaches of them that reproached Thee fell on Me,” and when He was here on earth, “Himself took our infirmities, and bare our sicknesses,” voluntarily making the troubles of others His very own. “By sorrow of the heart the spirit is broken,” and “heaviness in the heart of man maketh it stoop: but a good word maketh it glad.” Let us look for opportunities to “bear ... one another’s burdens,” the opportunity to speak that word or perform that act of kindness that will help our brother in his time of need. “We then that are strong ought to bear the infirmities of the weak, and not to please ourselves,” to be “distributing to the necessity of saints; given to hospitality. ... Rejoice with them that do rejoice, and weep with them that weep.” “Remember them that are in bonds, as bound with them; and them which suffer adversity, as being yourselves also in the body.”

Let me help my brother, dear Lord,
As Thou in grace hast helped me;
Let me bear his sorrows with him,
So that lighter his load may be.

One Thing Is Needful

     I have been doing some thinking and studying on the story of Mary and Martha in the gospel of Luke, chapter 10, verses 38-42.

"Now it came to pass, as they went, that he entered into a certain village: and a certain woman named Martha received him into her house. And she had a sister called Mary, which also sat at Jesus' feet, and heard his word. But Martha was cumbered about much serving, and came to him, and said, Lord, dost thou not care that my sister hath left me to serve alone? bid her therefore that she help me. And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things: But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her."

     As I understand it, this was Martha's home, in the town of Bethany. Martha may have been a widow, and Mary was her younger sister. (Lazarus, who Jesus had previously raised from the dead, was their brother.) This was a family that loved Jesus, and He also loved them very much.

     This is not a matter of Martha not being a true believer in Jesus, because she was. I believe this story is included in scripture to show us that we, as believers, can have our priorities out of order sometimes. Jesus was not condemning Martha for preparing the dinner. He knew that was important and necessary, what He was explaining to Martha, in a kind and loving way, was that she was putting too much thought, worry and care into preparing the dinner, when her priority should have been being close to Jesus and listening to His words. 

     When Jesus said "One thing is needful", I don't believe He meant that we should all do nothing but sit in a quiet, private room and read the bible and ignore all the other responsibilities of life. What He is trying to impress upon us here, is the importance of putting Him first, before anything else we do.

     Matthew 6:31-33 says "Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed? (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things. But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you." Something I appreciate about this portion is, God is very practical, He knows and understands every little need that we have. He just wants us to put Him first, because otherwise the cares and worries of other things will become idols in our lives, and will push God out of our lives and allow Satan to get a foothold in breaking up our communion with God. This is what was beginning to happen with Martha, she was so worried about her dinner preparations, she was missing out on what Jesus had to say. This is just how Satan disrupts the life of a believer. When this happens, our joy and peace in the Lord is hindered, and our testimony of the Lord to others is marred.

     One reason we need to make communion with the Lord our number one priority is, "I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing." John 15:5. When we don't put the Lord first, and acknowledge Him in all our ways, and allow Him to guide and direct our paths (Proverbs 3:6), our best efforts and intentions will be in vain. Even when we have very good, sincere, honest intentions, if we are not trusting in His strength and guidance, then we are just doing what seems right in our own eyes, and the results will not be blessed.

   

     The last few words of the portion we are studying about say: "Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her." I think that one of the things we can take from this is,  time spent studying God's word, praying, meditating on His great love He has for us, and the wonderful future Christians have to look forward to because of the finished work of Christ on the cross, are all eternal, never-changing truths. These things will never be taken away from us. On the other hand, anything we put before the Lord, whether it is worrying about preparing a meal, as Martha was, or anything else, is only temporary, and is not worth becoming an idol in our lives and only causes us to miss out on the joy and peace that is available to all of us if we make the decided effort to keep the Lord as the first priority in our lives!

     I pray the Lord will use these thoughts to help us all "Grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen." 2 Peter 3:18.

Freedom!

"Then Pharaoh sent and called Joseph, and they brought him hastily out of the dungeon: and he shaved himself, and changed his raiment, and came in unto Pharaoh." Genesis 41:14.

     "Then Pharaoh sent and called Joseph": Just as Joseph was bound in the dungeon, unable to free himself, someone in bondage to sin, is likewise in a spiritual dungeon, unable to escape by their own means. But, just as Pharaoh called Joseph to come out, God the Father is calling you to believe on His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, whose sinless blood paid the price for your sin!

  

     "And they brought him hastily out of the dungeon": Once the Holy Spirit convicts you of your need of the Savior, and you hear God the Father gently, lovingly, calling you, do not hesitate, come to Him immediately, for tomorrow may be late. You don't know whether this may be your last opportunity, many have perished into an eternity in Hell because they have heard the gospel message, but did not act on it immediately.

     "And he shaved himself, and changed his raiment, and came in unto Pharaoh":  Notice that Joseph cleaned himself up only after he was brought up out of the dungeon! This is very important to understand. We cannot clean ourselves up and make ourselves acceptable to God by ourselves. We are saved by grace, God wants us to come to Him just as we are. The definition of repentance takes in: Confession; acknowledging we have sinned and are in need of a Savior. Turn; being willing to make necessary changes in our lives and turn from the path we have been on, to following and obeying God.

     "Don't you see how wonderfully kind, tolerant, and patient God is with you? Does this mean nothing to you? Can't you see that his kindness is intended to turn you from your sin?" Romans 2:4 (NLT). The goodness and kindness of God is what helps us and allows us to repent. So, after you have believed on Jesus and His shed blood to cleanse you and make you acceptable in God's sight, then be willing to submit to Him and His Word. This will be an on-going, life-long process, and God is very patient, so never give up or get discouraged, or think you will lose your salvation if you do not measure up. Since your salvation is based solely on the finished work of Jesus on the cross, and not anything of yourself, you cannot do anything to lose it. The only unpardonable sin is neglecting to believe on Jesus for your salvation.

     I pray that this gospel message will be an encouragement for believers, and that any that read this that do not know the Lord Jesus Christ as their personal Lord and Savior, will hear the sweet voice of God the Father calling them to believe and trust in His only begotten Son. This message goes out to all in genuine christian love.
